Beyond the Cart

Motor Oil & Filter Recycling

Just one quart of improperly disposed motor oil can contaminate up to 2 million gallons of fresh water! Recology offers curbside collection of used motor oil and filters at no cost. Single-family residents can request up to five one-gallon plastic jugs to collect used motor oil in, and up to five zippered plastic bags to collect used motor oil filters. You can also use your own clear zippered plastic bags for used oil filters and clear plastic containers (one-gallon milk jug) for used motor oil, just make sure that the containers are properly sealed to prevent leaks. Simply leave the filled jugs and bags beside your blue recycle cart on your collection day and Recology will pick it up.

All residents can recycle used motor oil and filters for free at designated collection centers and at the Shoreway Public Recycling Center. Remember, used motor oil cannot be mixed with any other substance. Oil mixed with water, paint, solvents, rags, and antifreeze is contaminated. Contaminated oil must be taken to the San Mateo County Household Hazardous Waste Facility (650-363-4718). Drop-off is free.

Battery & Cell Phone Recycling

BatteryAll batteries and cell phones are considered Universal Waste once discarded because they contain heavy metals such as arsenic, mercury, lead, cadmium, and nickel. Heavy metals can contaminate the environment when improperly disposed. Recology offers curbside recycling of all batteries, including AAA, AA, C, D, button cell, 9 Volt, and others.

Tape button batteries to paper and place all batteries in a sealed plastic bag on top of your blue recycle cart on your collection day. Please do not place the sealed bag inside the cart.

To recycle old cell phones, wrap it in paper and place in the sealed plastic bag along with your batteries.

Holiday Trees

holiday tree 2Once you've removed all the tinsel, lights, decorations and stands from your holiday tree, you can leave the tree next to your green compost cart and Recology will pick it up for you between December 26 and January 31.

Please make sure trees are 8 feet and under. If it's taller than 8 feet, cut the tree into lengths of 8 feet or less. After January 31st, trees must be cut up and placed inside the compost cart for collection.
